California Gas Prices Hit Record High as Crude Oil Costs Soar
California and the Bay Area have seen gas prices climb in recent weeks. According to the latest fuel report from AAA's regional office in Walnut Creek, California currently has the highest average gas price in the nation at $5.57 per gallon. This is a 17-cent increase from last week.
The Bay Area cities of San Francisco, Oakland, and San Jose are among those affected by these rising prices, with averages of $5.76, $5.58, and $5.57 per gallon respectively.
Aldo Vazquez, spokesperson for the AAA Mountain West Group, attributed the price spike to increasing crude oil costs. 'Rising crude oil prices are behind the spike at the pump,' he stated. Volatility along the Strait of Hormuz and instability in the region have pushed oil prices into the $90 per barrel range.
The largest component of gas prices is the cost of crude oil, while refining costs make up a significant portion as well. National gasoline production increased last week, averaging 9.7 million barrels per day, but gasoline demand also increased to 8.94 million barrels per day.
