Canada Accelerates Pacific Oil Pipeline Amid Alberta Separation Vote
Canada is accelerating plans to build the Pacific oil pipeline, known as the Trans Mountain Expansion Project (TMX), in an effort to reduce dependence on US energy imports. The move comes as Alberta faces a potential separation vote amid tensions with Ottawa over oil exports and pipeline development.
The TMX project aims to increase the capacity of the existing Trans Mountain Pipeline from 300,000 barrels per day to 890,000 barrels per day. Construction is expected to begin this year, with an estimated completion date in 2024.
Proponents argue that the pipeline will help Canada reduce its reliance on US oil imports and create jobs. However, critics have expressed concerns over environmental impacts, particularly in British Columbia where the project has faced significant opposition.
