Canada Announces New Oil Pipeline to Pacific Coast Amid Rising Demand from Asia
Canada has announced plans to build a new oil pipeline from Alberta to the Pacific coast, which would increase its export options to Asia and reduce reliance on the US. The pipeline, set to carry 1 million barrels per day, is expected to begin construction as early as September 2027.
The project marks a compromise between environmental concerns and economic realities, with Prime Minister Mark Carney aiming to balance Canada's ideals with the impact of US tariffs. 'We've agreed the time for action is now,' said Carney.
Pembina would hold a 10% construction stake in the pipeline, with an option for another 10%. The federal government and Alberta would be majority owners, while funding details are still being negotiated.
