Canada Breaks Free from US Oil Monopoly with Massive Pipeline Project
Canada has made a significant move to reduce its reliance on the US market by approving a massive project to break the U.S. oil monopoly. The proposed Pacific Link oil pipeline, announced by Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, aims to provide Canada with direct access to international markets.
The project is estimated to produce over $265 billion in royalties for the province of Alberta over its 50-year lifespan. It also has the potential to create up to 140,000 jobs during construction and another 50,000 annual jobs when complete.
The pipeline's approval comes as a result of an ongoing trade dispute with Washington, which has made finding new global buyers a priority for Prime Minister Carney since he took office in March 2025. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has also emphasized the need for direct access to international markets to stay competitive.
