Canada Courts Europe for Energy Trade Amid US Dependence
Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand sees opportunities for energy trade between Canada and Europe. The minister's remarks follow a European tour that included discussions about associate membership, which could strengthen bonds between the two regions.
Anand stated in an interview with Reuters that 'every country I speak with asks about potential partnerships in energy.' This interest stems from Europe's reliance on U.S. energy supplies and its concerns over Middle Eastern conflicts limiting crude oil and natural gas availability.
Canada has several large-scale LNG projects under development, including the Prince Rupert Kanata floating facility. The project would have a peak design capacity of 12 million metric tons per year if built.
Last year, Canada became the first North American country to ship liquefied natural gas from its Pacific Coast when LNG Canada made its inaugural delivery. This achievement has sparked interest in Canadian energy exports among European countries.
