Canada Declares Trade War with US Over Coercive Negotiation Tactics
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada is at war with the US over trade negotiations, citing unacceptable language in the US's proposed agreement. The negotiations broke down after the US attempted to restrict Canada's ability to sign other trade deals.
In a tweet, Carney explained that the US introduced last-minute efforts to limit Canada's market access, which was seen as coercive and one-sided. He stated that no country would sign such a deal in good faith.
Carney also pointed out that the US's narrow merchandise trade deficit with Canada only exists because of the large amount of energy imported from Canada, including 99% of natural gas imports, 85% of electricity imports, and 60% of crude oil imports. Excluding energy, the US has a trade surplus with Canada.
Carney warned that the US is trying to break Canada so they can own them, but Canada is becoming stronger and less dependent on America. He stated that only 18 percent of Canadians don't want him to respond to the US's proposals.
