Canada-EU Energy Alliance Talks Gain Momentum Amid Europe's Precarious Energy Situation
Canada and the European Union are discussing the possibility of an energy alliance to bolster Europe's energy security, which is in a 'precarious situation' after pivoting away from Russian imports following the invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Prime Minister Mark Carney met with EU leaders in Strasbourg, France, to discuss strengthening ties on several fronts. Werner Antweiler, an economist at the University of British Columbia, notes that Europe is struggling to find alternative energy sources and may be able to secure a stable gas supply from Canada through swap contracts.
These contracts allow European companies to trade cargo headed for Asia with one bound for Europe, providing a potential solution to Europe's energy needs. Rachel Doran, executive director at Clean Energy Canada, also sees an opportunity to supply critical minerals to Europe, helping it transition away from fossil fuels and grow its clean power supply.
However, any large-scale project to export oil or gas from the East Coast would require significant infrastructure development and could take a decade or more to come to fruition, according to Antweiler.
