Canada Faces Pressure from Ukraine for Long-Term LNG Partnership

Ukraine has proposed a 30-year energy partnership with Canada centered on Canadian liquefied natural gas (LNG), according to Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal. The proposal, which follows recent agreements between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Prime Minister Mark Carney, aims to establish an 'energy security bridge' built around long-term supplies of Canadian LNG.

The two countries discussed a potential $650 million Canadian grant to help Ukraine purchase natural gas ahead of winter as part of Ottawa's broader support package. Russia has repeatedly targeted Ukraine's power grid, gas facilities, and heating infrastructure since its full-scale invasion in 2022, leaving millions vulnerable to blackouts during freezing winter months.

Shmyhal said the two countries also discussed cooperation in the gas sector and nuclear energy, with a focus on further diversifying gas supply routes. The proposal comes as Ukraine braces for another winter of Russian attacks on its energy infrastructure.
