Canada Fast-Tracks Approval for Massive Oil Pipeline Project
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced his government's plans to expedite regulatory approval for a new oil pipeline, dubbed Pacific Link. The pipeline will connect Alberta's northern oil sands to a terminal near Vancouver and have a capacity of up to one million barrels per day.
The project, which is expected to cost between C$35.2 billion and C$43.7 billion, has been designated as a 'project of national interest' under legislation passed last year. This allows the federal cabinet to exempt it from many laws and regulations if necessary.
Carney claimed that the pipeline will reduce Canada's dependence on US markets and create hundreds of thousands of jobs. He also stated that it will attract tens of billions of dollars in new investment into the Canadian economy.
