Canada Fast-Tracks Pacific Oil Pipeline Amid Alberta Separatist Tensions
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has fast-tracked a proposed oil pipeline, Pacific Link, which could reduce Canada's dependence on the United States and mend relations with oil-rich Alberta. The project aims to carry one million barrels of oil per day from Bruderheim, Alberta, to a deep water port near Delta, British Columbia.
The pipeline is expected to cost between $25 billion and $31 billion and has been designated as a project of national interest under legislation enacted by the Canadian government. Carney said that Canada had a 'once-in-a-generation opportunity to become an energy superpower' and end its reliance on a single trading partner.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, who is campaigning to keep Alberta in Canada ahead of a public vote on October 19, expressed support for the project, saying it was an example of 'cooperative federalism working in action.'
