Canada Gas Prices Plummet as Oil Markets Ease, but Relief May Be Short-Lived

Gas prices in Canada have dropped sharply in several provinces after oil prices eased globally. In Ontario and Quebec, overnight price drops reached about 10 cents per litre. Similar declines were seen in parts of Western Canada, including Alberta.

Dan McTeague, president of Canadians for Affordable Energy, said Calgary and Edmonton drivers can expect even lower gas prices within the next 24 to 48 hours. The wholesale price for gasoline has dropped by about 10 to 12 cents a litre.

The decline in gas prices follows a sharp drop in crude oil prices over the past 10 days. Oil prices had surged after conflict in the Middle East disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil exports. However, hopes that the waterway could reopen have helped ease oil prices, bringing gasoline prices down with them.

Despite the current relief, McTeague cautioned that the situation remains highly volatile due to ongoing uncertainty over the Strait of Hormuz. As news develops about potential breakthroughs, commodity and futures markets respond positively or negatively.
