Canada Gets $30B LNG Boost as Kitimat Expansion Wins Approval
LNG Canada's $30 billion-plus Phase-2 project in Kitimat has been given the green light, according to the company's CEO Chris Cooper. The expansion will double the plant's capacity from its current 14 million tonnes per year of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to 28 million tonnes.
The decision to move forward with Phase-2 was made by LNG Canada's joint-venture partners, led by Shell PLC, and is expected to create thousands of jobs. The project's initial phase has already delivered a significant amount of LNG to the market, helping to replace some of the disrupted global supply.
Celebrating the milestone, federal Energy Minister Tim Hodgson said: 'LNG Canada's decision to move forward with Phase 2 is a massive vote of confidence in Canada.' He added that Canada has what the world wants and can deliver on big projects. LNG Canada had dropped hints about its intentions to expand, but this news marks the official confirmation.
