Canada Greenlights LNG Canada Expansion Amid Global Energy Disruptions
The LNG Canada project in British Columbia has received approval to double its output from the existing terminal. This decision comes as global events have disrupted natural gas shipments from major producers, such as Qatar and Russia.
Prime Minister Mark Carney highlighted the importance of this project, stating that it is a 'perfect example' of Canada's ability to build and invest in energy infrastructure. He emphasized that high standards don't require slow decisions, and that Canada needs to move at a pace that meets the demands of the moment.
The LNG Canada partners include Shell, PetroChina, Malaysia's Petronas, Japan's Mitsubishi Corp., and South Korea's KOGAS. They have confirmed that customer demand in Asia is sufficient, and that Canada has abundant gas reserves to feed the plant for decades.
Despite concerns about flaring and environmental impacts during the first phase of the project, LNG Canada partners are moving forward with the expansion. The Coastal GasLink pipeline will be nearly doubled in capacity, allowing for increased gas supply to the terminal.
