Canada Greenlights Pacific Link Pipeline Project as National Priority
Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that the Pacific Link pipeline project has been designated as being in the national interest under the Building Canada Act. This designation streamlines and simplifies rules, timelines, and oversight to help make the project a reality.
The goal is to complete consultations, environmental safeguards, financing, and Indigenous partnerships by September 1, 2027, which would clear the way for construction to begin on the pipeline. The Pacific Link pipeline will carry up to one million barrels of crude oil per day from Bruderheim, Alberta, to a port near Delta, British Columbia, for shipment to international markets.
The project is estimated to cost between $35 billion and $44 billion, with Indigenous communities offered a minimum 10% ownership interest through federal and provincial loan programs. Pembina Pipeline Corporation will provide its expertise as a private sector investor. Carney emphasized that the pipeline is part of Canada's mission to double non-US exports over the next decade.
