Canada Puts Pacific Link Oil Pipeline Project on Fast Track
Prime Minister Mark Carney has designated the Pacific Link oil pipeline project as a Project of National Interest under the federal Building Canada Act.
The proposed pipeline would carry an additional one million barrels of crude a day from Alberta to Metro Vancouver for shipment to Asia and other international markets, providing another outlet beyond the United States.
According to Carney, 'Canada has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to become a global energy superpower' with this project.
The pipeline would take a southern route through British Columbia, avoiding sensitive coastal areas where a tanker ban remains in place.
The federal government estimates that Pacific Link would contribute more than $20 billion per year to Canada's gross domestic product and generate $100 billion in government revenue by 2060.
