Canada Remains Crucial Partner for US Amid Trade Tensions

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney reaffirmed his country's importance to the US in 'key areas' during a recent meeting with top global investors. The statement comes after trade talks between Canada and the US collapsed, leading to retaliatory tariffs on steel and dairy products.

Carney emphasized that despite disagreements, the two nations have maintained close ties, citing 'arrangements that work when we engage as true partners that respect each other's traditions and sovereignty.'

The prime minister warned of the need for Canada to diversify its economy due to US trade hostility, which he views as the new normal. However, he acknowledged the significance of the US market, with two-thirds of Canadian exports heading south of the border.

Carney expressed optimism about Canada's potential as an energy superpower, highlighting plans to build a pipeline to the Pacific coast that would carry at least one million barrels of low-emission oil per day to Asian markets. He aims to attract over Can$1 trillion (US$720 billion) in investment over the next five years.
