Canada Rushes Pacific Oil Pipeline Amid Alberta Separatist Tensions
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has fast-tracked a proposed oil pipeline to the Pacific Coast, aiming to reduce Canada's dependence on the United States and improve relations with oil-rich Alberta. The pipeline, now called Pacific Link, is expected to transport one million barrels of oil per day. This move comes as separatists push for a referendum on leaving Canada.
Carney designated the pipeline a project of national interest under legislation enacted to accelerate major infrastructure projects. He made this announcement with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith in Fort McMurray, the heart of Canada's oil sands.
