Canada Slams Door on Five Iranian Officials with Fresh Sanctions

Canada has imposed sanctions on five Iranian officials in response to their roles in actions that undermine international peace and security. The move, announced by Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand, targets individuals involved in threatening freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

The sanctioned officials include Ali Abdollahi, former commander of Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, who was appointed as chief of staff of the Iranian regime's Armed Forces on August 10. The other four individuals are Ebrahim Zolfaghari, spokesperson for Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters; Ebrahim Azizi, chairman of the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission of the Iranian parliament; Shahram Irani, commander of the Iranian Navy; and Hamid Hosseini, chairman of the board and spokesperson for the Iranian Oil, Gas and Petrochemical Products Exporters Union.

The sanctions prohibit conducting transactions with the individuals on the list, freezing any assets they hold in Canada, and impose a ban on entering Canada. The move comes amid rising tensions over maritime security and energy transportation in the Strait of Hormuz.
