Canada, Ukraine Deepen Energy Ties with Focus on LNG and Nuclear Power

Canada and Ukraine have expanded their energy cooperation agreement to focus on liquefied natural gas (LNG), nuclear power, and reconstruction efforts. The two countries signed a joint statement in Calgary on September 10, with Canadian Federal Energy and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson meeting with Ukraine's First Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal.

The agreement builds on the strategic energy cooperation agreement signed earlier this year and aims to support Ukraine's energy security, recovery, and long-term reconstruction. Canada has committed $10 million to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund, bringing its total contribution to $100 million, and offered up to $757 million in loan guarantees to the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

The countries are also discussing potential long-term agreements for Canadian LNG supply to Ukraine, although no specific agreement was announced. Additionally, they are cooperating on nuclear energy, with an existing agreement between Cameco Corporation and Ukraine's state nuclear operator Energoatom for uranium supplies and conversion services through 2035.
