Canada's Barley Exports Surge to Five-Year High Driven by Chinese Demand
Canadian barley exports have reached their highest level in five years, thanks to strong demand from China. According to the Canadian Grain Commission, barley exports totaled 3.26 million tons as of July 19, a significant increase of 1.4 million tons compared to the same period last year.
The Chinese market has been driving this growth, with imports reaching their highest level in five years. This is particularly notable given that Canada's canola exports have remained limited due to punitive tariffs imposed on Canadian canola imports.
Despite lower shipments of canola, soybeans, and oats, the strong barley exports helped Canada maintain a solid pace of overseas sales. The country's grain exports reached 49.2 million tons by July 19, with non-durum wheat exports also experiencing growth, reaching 22.2 million tons as of July 19.
This rebound in Canadian grain exports has reduced ending stocks of several major crops and is providing support to the market ahead of the new harvest.
