Canada's Far North Sees Economic Revival Amid Renewed Interest in Resources

Canada's far north is poised for an economic turnaround due to renewed interest in the region's natural resources, according to Northwest Territories' Premier R.J. Simpson.

The sudden focus on the Arctic's security and resources has come at a crucial time as traditional economic drivers like diamond mining decline. Rio Tinto Group closed its Diavik diamond mine this month, while Burgundy Diamond Mines Ltd. laid off hundreds of workers after halting operations last year.

However, Simpson is optimistic about the future, citing Prime Minister Mark Carney's announcement of $32 billion to shore up Arctic defences as a game-changer for the region. The government has also proposed several infrastructure projects, including the Mackenzie Valley Highway and Grays Bay Road and Port, which could make it easier to extract resources from the area.

New mining opportunities are emerging in the rush to secure critical minerals for military needs and electronics, with some companies exploring lithium production. Simpson also sees potential for exporting liquefied natural gas to Asian markets via ice breakers, but this would require buy-in from the Indigenous-owned Inuvialuit Regional Corp.
