Canada's LNG Expansion Project Secures Major Investment
LNG Canada, an industrial joint venture operating a liquefied natural gas (LNG) export facility in Kitimat, British Columbia, has made significant progress on its expansion project. The company's five joint venture partners, Shell, PETRONAS through EIG-managed MidOcean Energy, PetroChina, Mitsubishi Corp., and KOGAS, have collectively taken a final investment decision on Phase 2 of the expansion.
This represents one of the largest private sector investments in Canada. LNG Canada benefits from access to abundant, lower-cost natural gas delivered from the Montney Formation via the Coastal GasLink pipeline.
The facility processes this gas using equipment with lower carbon intensity, producing LNG for export. From Canada's West Coast, LNG can be shipped directly to trading partners in Asia in approximately 10 days, which is roughly half the sailing time from the U.S. Gulf Coast via the Panama Canal.
