The Canadian government's approval of various pipeline projects has sparked optimism about the country's energy prospects. The summer of 2026 may be remembered as 'pipeline summer' due to the large number of new pipelines and expansions planned.

In April, Enbridge Inc.'s $4-billion Sunrise natural gas pipeline project in British Columbia received federal approval. By July, a southern route was chosen for the West Coast Oil Pipeline, with Delta B.C.'s Roberts Bank proposed as the terminal/port. The federal government designated the project 'in the national interest' under the Building Canada Act, allowing it to fast-track approvals.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford also announced the Northern Shield Energy Corridor route for a pipeline carrying 500,000 barrels of Alberta crude to refineries in southwestern Ontario. ATCO Energy's 146-mile, $2.9 billion Yellowhead Gas Pipeline was approved by the Alberta Utilities Commission on July 20th.

Kendall Dilling, President of Oil Sands Alliance, believes Canada and the U.S. are 'incredibly fortunate' due to their status as big exporters of natural gas and oil, viewed as low-risk from a geopolitical perspective. He emphasizes that consumers have a choice of where to source their oil and gas.

The panellists at the Pacific Northwest Economic Region's 2026 conference agreed that when a pipeline is built, it's a 25-year bet on market demand. Companies face challenges in ensuring commercial viability and sufficient supply over the long term.
