Canada's Pipeline Pivot Threatens US Refinery Dominance
A major pipeline project in Canada could have far-reaching consequences for US refineries and the global oil market, according to GasBuddy analyst Patrick De Haan. The Pacific Link pipeline is set to transport 1 million barrels of oil per day from Alberta to Asia, bypassing the US.
This shift could lead to a loss of crude supply for US refineries that rely on Canadian oil, potentially impacting their operations and profitability. De Haan notes that the expansion of Canada's existing Trans Mountain system will add significant capacity, further reducing reliance on US refineries.
The pipeline project is expected to generate 140,000 jobs across Canada and C$100 billion ($70.3 billion) in revenue by 2060. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney sees the pipeline as an opportunity for Canada to become a global energy superpower and reduce its reliance on a single trade partner.
