Canadian Farmers Expect Record Corn and Soybean Harvests Amid Wheat Decline
Canadian farmers are expected to harvest more corn for grain and soybeans in 2026 while producing less wheat, canola, barley, and oats than a year earlier. According to yield model estimates released by Statistics Canada using satellite imagery and agroclimatic data, national wheat production is projected to fall 10.9% year over year to 36.1 million tonnes in 2026.
The decline is led by spring wheat, with production anticipated to fall 10.9% to 26.5 million tonnes as yields drop 7.7% to 55.0 bushels per acre and harvested area declines 3.4% to 17.7 million acres.
National canola yields are expected to decrease 8.3% to 41.8 bushels per acre in 2026, while even with harvested area rising 8.0% to a record 23.2 million acres, production is anticipated to edge down 0.8% to 22.1 million tonnes.
National corn for grain production is projected to rise 11.3% to 16.5 million tonnes in 2026, which would be a record and surpass the previous high of 15.4 million tonnes set in 2023.
