Canadian Oil and Gas Industry Surges on Improved Drilling Methods
The Canadian oil and gas exploration and production industry has been gaining momentum in recent years, driven by supportive trends such as wider crude export routes, growing LNG capacity, and improved drilling methods. As a result, the industry has outperformed both the broader Oil-Energy sector and the S&P 500, with a gain of 58.1% over the past year.
The industry's deep resource base provides a long runway for production and reserve growth, offering producers flexibility to shift capital toward projects offering better returns when commodity prices or costs change. Better technology is also helping operators lower costs and use capital more efficiently, reducing the need to chase expensive new acreage simply to maintain production.
However, the industry remains exposed to factors outside producers' control, such as commodity-price swings, tariffs, and regulatory uncertainty. Despite these risks, the overall setup looks constructive, with earnings expectations improving and estimates for 2026 and 2027 moving sharply higher over the past year.
