Canadian Oil Producers Rethink Hedging Strategies Amid High Prices
Canadian oil producers are rethinking their hedging strategies after being burned by high prices.
The companies, operating in Alberta's oil-rich heartland, have been reducing or abandoning hedges for the second half of the year, freeing up more cash for investment or shareholder returns.
Baytex Energy Corp. has ended its hedges on West Texas Intermediate (WTI), while Tamarack Valley Energy Ltd. plans to reduce its hedging share from 50% to around 20%. International Petroleum Corp. is fully exposed to WTI and Brent prices since July.
This shift mirrors the approach of U.S. producers, who have been retreating from hedging as their balance sheets improve.
