Canadian Oil Sands Production Set to Reach New Record High

Canadian oil sands production is expected to reach a new record of 3.5 million barrels per day in 2026, marking the 25th consecutive year of growth, according to S&P Global Energy's latest analysis.

The bulk of this growth will come from optimizing existing facilities, but there is also potential for new construction projects to add to production capacity in the future.

This optimism is driven by developments such as increased pipeline export capacity, clarification and extension of carbon pricing policies, and changes to fiscal terms for new oil sands projects.

However, new construction projects are more capital-intensive and require longer lead times, and important details remain to be determined.
