Canadian Prairies' Delayed Harvest Sparks Quality Issues in Feed Grains
The delayed harvest on the Canadian Prairies is causing quality issues in feed grains such as barley and wheat. According to Susanne Leclerc of Market Master Ltd. in Edmonton, these problems include ergot, fusarium, vomitoxin, test weights, moisture levels, and protein issues.
Leclerc warns that farmers need to be aware of the quality of their grain before selling it, as discounts vary at different elevators and feedlots. Farmers should ask for discount schedules when selling their grain.
The prices for feed barley in the Edmonton area are around C$5.50 per bushel picked up in the yard, while feed wheat is priced between C$7.75 to C$8.10 per bushel.
One factor influencing prices is the differential between what feedlots and elevators are willing to pay. Leclerc notes that feedlots are starting to negotiate lower prices due to export programs supported by the elevators.
