Capstone Copper Corp Unloads Mexican Mine for Up to $385 Million
Capstone Copper Corp (ASX:CSC) recently announced plans to sell its Cozamin mine in Mexico for up to $385 million. The sale is intended to simplify the company's portfolio and strengthen its balance sheet, allowing it to focus on growth projects in Chile and the United States.
Under the agreement with Luca Mining Corp, Capstone will receive $275 million in upfront cash, as well as 15 million shares of Luca stock and up to $60 million in contingent payments tied to copper prices. The transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2026, pending regulatory approvals.
Capstone's CEO Cashel Meagher noted that Cozamin has been an important part of the company's portfolio since its first full year of operations in 2007, providing stability and cash flow as Capstone developed into a diversified copper producer. He stated that the transaction optimizes the portfolio and allows capital to be redeployed into growth projects.
The sale may reduce Capstone's diversification and near-term production base, increasing reliance on its remaining assets in Chile and the United States. The company's growth projects involve capital spending and execution risk, while copper price volatility will continue to influence earnings.
