Carney and Smith Unveil Next Steps for Major Alberta Pipeline Project
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and Prime Minister Mark Carney are set to make a significant announcement in Fort McMurray, Alberta, regarding a major pipeline project. The project aims to enhance Alberta's access to international markets by transporting crude oil from Bruderheim, near Edmonton, to a port south of Vancouver, British Columbia.
The estimated cost of the pipeline is between $35.2 billion and $43.7 billion, with an expected capacity to transport one million barrels of crude oil daily. The project would be shared among Trans Mountain Corporation, the Alberta Petroleum Marketing Commission, and Pembina Pipeline Corp., with Pembina holding a 10% stake and an option to acquire an additional 10% once operational.
On October 1, the federal government set a deadline for designating the pipeline as a project of national interest. This designation would place the project within a regulatory framework designed to expedite major infrastructure initiatives. However, it's essential to note that this designation does not equate to final construction approval.
