Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has denied that a new pipeline project is aimed at appeasing separatists in Alberta. The proposed pipeline, which will carry 1 million barrels of crude oil per day from Bruderheim to British Columbia's southern coast, was announced by Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith on July 2.

Cary argued that the pipeline's construction is crucial for Canada's reputation as a reliable supplier of oil. 'One of the biggest commodities, arguably the best, is trust,' he said. 'People trust us, and so when you're a supplier of a key commodity, a key service, you've got to think really hard about not supplying [that commodity].'

The pipeline project has been met with criticism from environmental groups, who estimate it will add 20-28 megatonnes of carbon to Canada's annual emissions. However, supporters of the separatist movement in Alberta have welcomed the announcement as a sign that Canada can work within the federation rather than pursuing independence.

Industry leaders have stated that they plan to return profits to shareholders instead of investing in new projects, despite the oil and gas industry expecting $100 billion in profits in 2026, a threefold increase over original estimates due to the US and Israel's war on Iran.
