Carney Warns Against Using Oil Exports as Trade Leverage
Canada's reliability as an energy supplier could be at risk if it uses oil exports as leverage in trade negotiations with the United States, said Prime Minister Mark Carney. He emphasized the importance of being a reliable supplier, citing trust as one of Canada's most valuable commodities. Carney made these comments during a housing announcement in Red Deer, Alberta, alongside Premier Danielle Smith.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford previously suggested that Canada could 'dismantle' the United States if it used energy exports to exert pressure against Washington's threatened tariffs. The Trump administration has announced 50% tariffs on certain Canadian goods set to take effect on August 19.
The poll, conducted by Castanet, asked whether Canada should use oil exports as leverage in trade negotiations with the U.S. The results showed that 57.0% of respondents voted 'no', while 28.2% voted 'yes'. The remaining 14.8% were unsure.
