Carney Warns of Dollar Dominance Threat
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has been speaking out about his concerns regarding the dominance of the US dollar in global markets. He believes that the world should move away from relying on the US dollar and instead adopt a more multipolar system with several reserve currencies.
Carney's comments come as central banks around the world are buying gold and shedding US Treasuries, a trend known as the 'debasement trade.' This investment strategy emphasizes holding tangible assets such as gold, silver, and commodities to protect against the decline of fiat currencies caused by monetary debasement.
Carney has been critical of the US for weaponizing the dollar, using it as a foreign policy tool. He warned that financial mechanisms are being used for coercive purposes and hinted at the need for closer cooperation between Canada and Europe in developing payment systems that bypass those controlled by the US.
The US Treasury market is selling off due to concerns over the country's $40 trillion debt and its inclination to borrow and spend without restraint. This has led to a decrease in demand for dollar-denominated assets, which could cause a dollar glut and further depreciation of the currency.
