Carney's Export Goal Sparks Skepticism Amid Dairy Ban Headaches
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has set an ambitious goal to double non-U.S. exports by 2035, but industry experts say it won't be easy for Canada's grain sector to meet this target.
According to Mark Hemmes, president of Quorum Corp., doubling exports to countries other than the U.S. would require significant investments in infrastructure, including more locomotives, railcars, and track for Canada's national railways.
Railways prefer to respond to market signals rather than building new infrastructure in anticipation of increased business, Hemmes noted.
Meanwhile, the U.S. ban on Canadian dairy products is affecting Ontario's goat milk sector, with about two-thirds of the province's goat milk being sold in the U.S. market.
