Central Banks Flee US Gold Reserves Amid Geopolitical Uncertainty

Central banks are quietly pulling massive amounts of gold from US vaults, sparking concerns about the country's status as a safe haven. The Netherlands recently transferred approximately 86 metric tons of gold from the US and Canada to London due to 'mounting geopolitical turmoil' and the need for 'heightened crisis preparedness.'

This move follows similar reserve repatriation strategies executed by France, which recently liquidated its final remnants of gold balances stored in New York, earning equivalent accounting profits of roughly $15 billion. Germany also completed major gold repatriations during President Donald Trump's first presidential term.

Central banks are re-evaluating their precious metal reserves and where they are physically stored, driven by the need for operational control and certainty that they can access their physical holdings immediately during a crisis. The US safe-haven image is being challenged by economic and military threats issued by President Trump, including aggressive tariff warfare and the January arrest of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro.

The next major target for gold stands at $5,400 per ounce, provided central bank purchases persist, the dollar weakens, and geopolitical risks escalate. Experts warn that global trust in the US is eroding due to the unpredictability of President Trump's economic policies, but a White House official maintains that the post-WWII international architecture remains secure under Trump administration leadership.
