Central Banks Flock to Gold as Kyrgyzstan's Reserves Soar

Kyrgyzstan has seen its international reserves exceed $10 billion for the first time in history, setting a new record. This increase is attributed to the country's strategic significance as one of the leading gold producers in Central Asia.

The Kumtor deposit is considered one of the largest gold mines in the region. Gold is traditionally viewed as a reliable protective asset, which explains its growing share in international reserves among central banks.

A study by the World Gold Council shows that over the past four years, central banks have been acquiring an average of about 1,000 tons of gold annually, nearly double the previous decade's average. According to a survey, 89% of central banks expect global gold reserves to grow in the next 12 months, with 45% planning to increase their holdings, a record figure.

The changes in global metal prices create opportunities for private investors as well. For example, if an investor bought gold at $3,980 per troy ounce on July 1, 2026, and sold it at $4,230 on August 1, their return would have been about 6.3%, with a profit of $63 from a $1,000 investment.
