Centre Hikes Wheat MSP by Rs 25 to Rs 2,610/Quintal for 2027-28 Rabi Marketing Year
The Centre has increased the minimum support price (MSP) for wheat to Rs 2,610 per quintal for the 2027-28 rabi marketing year. This is a marginal increase of Rs 25 from the previous MSP of Rs 2,585 per quintal in 2026-27.
The hike comes as the government aims to provide remunerative prices to farmers and incentivize crop diversification. According to Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the production cost of wheat is Rs 1,264 per quintal, but the MSP has been kept at more than double.
The MSP for other rabi crops has also been increased, with barley rising to Rs 2,286 per quintal from Rs 2,150 in 2026-27. The MSP of gram has gone up by Rs 83 to Rs 5,958 per quintal, while that of masur (lentil) has been raised by Rs 390 to Rs 7,390 per quintal.
The total payout to farmers for the procurement of 324 lakh tonnes in the 2027-28 marketing year is estimated at Rs 90,962 crore. The government has assured a margin of at least 50 per cent over the cost of production for all six mandated rabi crops.
