Chad Bans Grain Exports Amid Drought Crisis

Chad's government has imposed a ban on exporting several grains in an effort to safeguard domestic supply after severe drought and heatwaves affected crops across various regions. The export of millet, corn, rice, sorghum, wheat, and cotton seeds is prohibited effective September 9, 2026.

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has also exempted import duties on several staple goods and agricultural equipment. This includes wheat, corn, millet, rice, certain flours and semolinas, livestock feed, and equipment for drilling, pumping, and agriculture. These exemptions took effect immediately upon signing.

According to the World Food Programme, 3.5 million people in Chad are facing severe food insecurity, with 1.5 million refugees hosted by the country, mostly from Sudan. The drought has already impacted agricultural and pastoral areas, with farmers losing crops and herders struggling to find water for their livestock.
