Chevron Expands Operations in Venezuela Amid Ambitious Oil Deal
US oil giant Chevron has confirmed it will expand its operations in Venezuela, with plans to invest over $7 billion over the next five years. This move follows an ambitious deal between the US and Venezuelan governments to develop the nation's oil reserves.
The expanded position gives Chevron additional acreage in the Orinoco Belt, where the company already has a significant presence. With this new investment, production is expected to more than double to approximately 600,000 barrels per day, compared to current levels.
Chevron CEO Mike Wirth stated that the company's history in Venezuela spans over a century and that it has confidence in the country's deep resource potential. The deal has been met with skepticism from analysts who say it will take years to revive Venezuela's oil industry, which is currently in disarray.
