Chevron Expands Operations in Venezuela Amid Concerns Over Legitimacy
US oil giant Chevron is expanding its operations in Venezuela, investing over $7 billion over five years to more than double production from approximately 600,000 barrels a day. The company has been assigned additional acreage in the Orinoco Belt and plans to increase output after decades of decline due to underinvestment and international sanctions.
Chevron's expanded position reflects its confidence in Venezuela's deep resource potential, according to CEO Mike Wirth. The country holds over 303 billion barrels of proven reserves, making it the world's largest oil reserve holder.
However, experts warn that Venezuela's dilapidated oil infrastructure will require years of restoration work and tens of billions of dollars to resuscitate. The deal between Chevron and the Venezuelan government has been met with skepticism due to concerns over legitimacy and potential future challenges from future governments or administrations.
