Chile Storm Disrupts Copper Supply, Raises Concerns Over AI Infrastructure

A severe storm swept across central Chile last week, killing at least ten people and damaging over 1,000 homes. The disaster has disrupted operations at some of the world's most productive copper mines, further exacerbating an already tight global supply situation.

The country's major copper producers, including Codelco and Anglo American, have reduced or suspended activities at several key facilities due to heavy snowfall, flooding, and landslides. The timing of this disruption is particularly concerning as the markets were already warning of a structural supply gap large enough to threaten the growth of artificial intelligence infrastructure, electric vehicles, and the global energy transition.

Copper is an essential component in various industries, including AI data centers, electric vehicle powertrains, grid-scale renewable energy infrastructure, and residential cooling systems. The sudden disruption in Chilean copper supply has sparked concerns about meeting the projected demand of 42 million metric tonnes by 2040. According to a study by S&P Global Market Intelligence, copper supply is expected to fall short by 10 million metric tonnes, a shortfall of 23.8%.
