China Bioethanol Feedstock Market Sees 6-8% Annual Growth Through 2035
China's bioethanol feedstock market is expected to grow at a rate of 6-8% annually from 2026 to 2035, driven by the national push towards E10 and pilot E20 ethanol-blended gasoline mandates. Corn remains the dominant feedstock, accounting for 60-70% of total consumption, while cassava and agricultural residues are gaining policy support as non-grain alternatives.
The market is influenced by government blending mandates, grain reserve management, and regional agricultural development priorities. The country's major corn belts align with ethanol production clusters in the northern and northeastern provinces, where corn dominates the feedstock landscape. Cassava is preferred in the southern provinces due to its tropical cultivation suitability and established import infrastructure.
Non-grain feedstocks are expected to grow from under 15% of the feedstock mix today to 25-30% by 2035 as policy incentives mature. Cellulosic ethanol from agricultural residues is moving from pilot to early commercial scale, though high enzyme and pretreatment costs continue to limit profitability.
