China Completes First 88,000-Cubic-Meter LNG Carrier
China has made significant strides in its high-end shipbuilding sector with the completion of its first 88,000-cubic-meter very large liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier. The Chang Ping Yuan vessel measures approximately 230 meters in length and features advanced low-temperature welding technology developed domestically.
The ship's construction marks a breakthrough in China's independent design and construction of similar vessels, breaking a long-standing technological monopoly held by overseas competitors. With the ability to transport nine types of liquefied gas, including LPG and ammonia, the Chang Ping Yuan is well-suited for future global demand in the ammonia shipping market.
The vessel's dual-fuel main engine reduces carbon dioxide emissions by about 20 percent and sulfur oxides and particulate matter emissions by approximately 90 percent compared to fuel-oil mode. It meets internationally leading environmental standards, making it an environmentally friendly addition to China's clean energy transport fleet.
China Media Group (CMG) reported on Tuesday that the vessel has completed construction and is now ready for operation. This achievement lays a solid technical foundation for the independent construction of China's large-scale clean energy transport fleet.
