MME vs Petrobras: Gas Market Deconcentration Proposal Sparks Tension
A proposal to reduce concentration in Brazil's natural gas market has sparked tension between Petrobras and the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME). The 'gas release' plan, currently under public consultation at the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP), aims to increase competition by holding annual auctions for natural gas. According to an ANP survey, 81% of industry participants consider this essential.
The MME is pursuing a policy aimed at lowering gas prices, while Petrobras has stated that the market is not concentrated. The company declined to comment on the matter. A public hearing on the proposal will be held in October, and the results are expected to be assessed by 2030.
