China Doubles Down on Gold Purchases Despite Elevated Prices
The People's Bank of China (PBOC) has added approximately 20.2 tonnes of gold to its reserves in August, marking the largest monthly purchase since October 2023.
This brings the total reserves to 76.73 million ounces and a reported value increase due to additional metal and higher prices.
The streak of consecutive months of buying now stands at 22, indicating an ongoing effort by China to diversify its national reserves through gold allocations.
While this demand can support gold prices during periods of weakness in other investment flows, it's essential to note that bullion remains sensitive to various factors such as real interest rates, the U.S. dollar, inflation expectations, and shifts in geopolitical risk.
