US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's announcement of Operation 'Economic Outcast' has put China at the forefront of Washington's efforts to pressure Iran. The operation threatens harsh sanctions against countries that refuse to cease commercial relations with Iran, but convincing China to join is a difficult mission.

China, as the world's second-largest economy, is a vital source of economic support for Tehran. It buys most of Iran's oil exports, estimated at tens of billions of dollars last year, along with other products and services traded between the two countries.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry has promised to 'take all necessary measures' to protect its own legitimate rights and interests in the face of US threats of sanctions.
