China Presses Iran to Rein in Yemen's Houthi Rebels
China has urged Iran to use its influence over the Houthi group in Yemen to halt attacks on Saudi oil exports and shipping routes. The request comes after Saudi Arabia sought China's assistance in addressing threats to its shipping routes and oil exports, which have been pressured by the Houthis' control along the Red Sea coast and around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
The Houthi group has strengthened its control in these areas, disrupting two main oil export routes from the Middle East. Iran, which has provided the Houthis with weapons, training, and funding, is seen as a key player in resolving the conflict.
China's call on Iran to exert its influence over the Houthi group was made after Saudi Arabia requested China's assistance in addressing threats to its shipping routes and oil exports. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that China does not wish to see regional tensions extend to Yemen and the Red Sea, and called for the cessation of actions that further complicate the situation.
China has been Iran's largest trading partner for over 10 years, and is the main buyer of Iranian oil. According to Kpler, China's purchases will account for 80% of Iran's oil exports via sea routes by 2025, averaging around 1.4 million barrels per day.
