China's Aluminum Export Surge Defies Global Market Logic
The global aluminum price has remained steady despite rising European natural gas prices, which would normally cause an increase in production costs for aluminum producers. One reason for this anomaly is China's significant ramp-up of its aluminum exports.
This phenomenon is reminiscent of the situation in 2022 when Europe's natural gas prices skyrocketed due to Russia's pipeline export cuts. At that time, China took advantage of the situation by increasing its aluminum exports, driving up global prices. Now, as European natural gas prices are rising again, China is once more exporting large quantities of aluminum.
This move has put pressure on European producers, who are facing increased costs but stagnant prices for their products. The result is a squeeze on two fronts: rising costs without corresponding price increases. This situation is a serious threat to Europe's aluminum industry, courtesy of China's export strategies.
