China's Gold Buying Surge Sets Stage for Record Year
China's gold imports have surged to a record-breaking 1,141 tonnes through August this year, surpassing the country's total for all of 2025. This strong demand may help cushion gold pullbacks despite dollar strength and rate pressure.
The central bank added 20 tonnes of gold in August, lifting reserves to 2,387 tonnes, with a pace of accumulation that has accelerated 17 times this year. China is heading for a record year of gold buying, with imports reaching the 1,700-tonne mark if the current pace holds through December.
Domestic economic uncertainty and a strong yuan have pushed investors toward bullion, making overseas gold cheaper to import. The country's investment flows into Chinese gold ETFs also told a similar story, climbing 44 tonnes since January, an 18% jump from the same period last year.
